Paramount is developing a sequel to the John Singleton-directed Four Brothers, to be titled Five Brothers.

Mark Wahlberg is looking to star and hatched the sequel idea with original writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett, who are writing the script. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is back to produce.

In the 2005 release, the Mercer brothers – hotheaded Bobby (Wahlberg), hard-edged Angel (Tyrese Gibson), family man and businessman Jeremiah (André Benjamin), and hard rocking Jack (Garrett Hedlund) – reunite to take the matter of their adoptive mother’s death into their own hands. As they track down the killer, they quickly realize that their old ways of doing business have new consequences.

Plot details for the follow-up are being kept under wraps.

Paramount is developing a sequel to its 2005 thriller “Four Brothers,” bringing back many of the creative team for “Five Brothers.”

Mark Wahlberg eyeing a return to star and hatched the sequel idea with original writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett, who are writing “Five.” Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is back to produce.

The 2005 movie, directed by John Singleton, revolved around four adopted brothers (Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andre Benjamin and Garrett Hedlund) who come together to avenge their mother’s death in what at first appears to be a random robbery. Although not a massive hit, it still grossed a tidy $74 million in domestic boxoffice.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, and it is not clear which of the other actors, if any, would return. Hedlund would appear to be out, as his character was killed in the first movie.

Wahlberg, repped by WME and Leverage Entertainment, stars in Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones” and appears in “Date Night” with Steve Carell and Tina Fey.

Elliot and Lovett, repped by Verve and Category 5 Entertainment, were writers on “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” Paramount’s tentpole hit this past summer.

Host: Welcome back to TRL, blah blah 50 cent, kate hudson blahhhh and right now I’m hanging out with the very good looking cast of Four Brothers and I’m talking about Mark Wahlberg, Garrett Hedlund, Tyrese Gibson and Andre Benjamin 3000. Now Garrett, you’ve heard of these guys before, right?
Garrett: Oh, for sure.
Host: So, when you met them, the first time you met them was it everything you’d thought that they would be like? Or did any of them throw you off? do you know what I mean?
Garrett: ummm no, I mean, [sigh] they’re all, you know, three great guys.

Host: He’s not gonna call anybody out. alright.
Garrett: well like I was a fan of Outkast when I was in high school and when I

Mark: He was a boy when I was rapping.
Garrett: When I met Mark, you know, he treated me like a younger brother sort of like on this film and you know, I looked up to him.
Host: Alright, that’s fair enough.
Mark: What about your other boy?
Garrett: And this boy [pointing to Tyrese] you know, I respect his tunes.
Mark: Sing a little bit of, sing one of Tyrese’s songs. Garrett’s got a great singing voice
Garrett: I’ve sang that song so many times.
Host: Can you sing one of his songs?
Tyrese: Give me a little something here.
Andre: He sang his songs all on the set.

Host: Now wait, Tyrese, [Andre says "That's right, go for it!", Host points to Garrett] I’m giving you credit there, but now Andre this is your second movie, I mean, you’re working with these guys, did it help you out with Mark and with Tyrese having been from the music business to the acting world? Did they give you like transition advice? or is it just a natural thing for you?
Andre Well I think we had something in common being we all came from a music background and um we didn’t sit around and talk about, you know, being a musician a lot, it was pretty much about the work so when it was time to do like an important scene we’d sit around and kinda give each other pep talks but it wasn’t like big classes of let’s be brothers class, you know?
Mark: Andre’s an artist, man, he brings a lot of his real life experiances to the table and you know, he’s commited 110% and he’s gonna be able to do whatever he wants to.
Andre: Well thank you, thank you my big brother, that’s my big brother.
Host: Well you all had a good vibe going on here.
Tyrese: You owe him for that.
Mark: You know what, this is probably the first time since we’ve made this movie, we started in January, this is probably the first time that we’ve complimented one another because all we do is insult each other

Host: right right, do you ever think about getting into music? seriously with all these guys in music.
Garrett: Nahh, and I’m the one playing the rockstar in the film!
Host: Love it, love it. Speaking of rockstar, you[Mark] did the rock thing in Rockstar, we heard you sing in Boogie Nights, doing your hiphop thing back in the day, would you ever switch gears back over to music again?
Mark: Aww man, I’m 34. It should be a law. You should only be able to rap up until a certain age. And dress a certain way at a certain age. But no, Tyrese has been talking about getting me back in to the studio.
Tyrese Yeah, we’re gonna get Mark back out, you guys want to see Mark back out?
Host: I think you should do it! Alright now, anyways, Four brothers in theaters this friday. Mark, Tyrese, Andre and Garrett [goes around hugs them all, welcomes Garrett to TRL].

Gibson conquered modeling, has a thriving acting career and now wants to tackle the world of rap music. He says it’s his biggest challenge yet.

What it’s about: Four grown-up brothers return home for their adoptive mother’s funeral and decide to take revenge on the gangsters who murdered her.

Between Mark Wahlberg, Andre Benjamin and you, who was the first one to break the ice when you met each other?
Tyrese Gibson: We all did in our own way. We didn’t have a lot of time to spend together. First we had three days of ice-hockey training. We didn’t hang out though, we just kind of laughed at each other. Garrett and Mark got close really fast; they knew how to ice skate. Me and Andre couldn’t, so we ended up hanging out. But by the second day, we all came together. It was fun. I was very sad when the filming ended.

The movie is about standing up for something you hold dear. When is the last time you took a stance?

TG: If you were to listen to my voice mail right now, you’d hear me standing up. I’m going through a weird phase. I’ve been living with this “me” for 26 years. I want to meet a new “me.” With that, you have to tell people to stop calling with all their problems. Stop calling when they’re in the hole and need to get out. Stop calling to get help with bad choices. I want to tell them all to stop calling on Tyrese and start calling on Jesus. That’s what my outgoing message is for everyone who has been calling my phone. It got to be too much for me to hear. I had to finally stand up and say, “Yo, I can’t do it no more. I can’t help myself right now, so I definitely can’t help anyone else.”

Garrett Hedlund: Is it my turn to answer? I’m not following that up!

What is a surprising fact you learned about director John Singleton?

GH: He is a little boy in a man’s body. He’s a very excited person, very passionate and focused. He likes to try new things. The theme of this film is honor thy mother. Who would expect that from him?

TG: I’ve worked with him for three movies. All I can say is that his name should be John Wrinkleton. He needs to iron his clothes before he leaves the house. His clothes are always all wrinkled. People tell him all the time. We definitely told him on this film, but he don’t care.

Garrett, you’re the new guy in the group. Did you pick up any lessons or tips from your big name co-stars?

GH: These guys taught me how to dance. You can take it however you want. Three coordinated dancers taught me a few steps. You know what? I got to be honest. I’m sorry, I’m jetlagged. I was in Germany and Hungary yesterday, I’m so sleepy. I was there filming a movie. It’s hard. I’m sorry I’m so out of it.

Isn’t this what you wished for?

GH: Well, not exactly. I actually don’t wish for much. It’s not exciting during the process of being in three countries in one day or the long plane ride home. But when I look back, I really like it all. And when the movies come out, that’s great.

Tyrese, you got your break at 14. People might say your career came easy. Is that a misconception?

TG: I got a saying: I don’t respect it if it comes easy. There are a lot of things I wish I had done earlier in the game that could have helped me get here even faster. For everyone out there who’s reading this article you have to surround yourself with people who believe in you. That way if you ever lose faith, you have people who will help you stay motivated to keep it going. And when you finally make it, you can thank God for that person coming into your life.

New York City – Garrett Hedlund has only three movies under his belt. And one of them hasn’t even opened in theaters yet. But at twenty years old, and six feet, three inches on either side of that belt, Hedlund’s blonde hair and blue-eyed charm is enough to make a name for this young, budding actor.
He played Patroclus, in his first film, “Troy”, cousin to Brad Pitt’s Achilles character. There, he opened at number one in its first week of release. His second film, “Friday Night Lights,” also opened at number one. However, have you even heard of the man?

“Four Brothers’” producer Lorezno di Boneventura is confident that the third time will be the charm. I spoke with both di Boneventura (who has a remarkable record – having produced among many films, “Constantine,” the first “Matrix” and the upcoming “Doom”) and Hedlund, separately, during a recent weekend in the Big Apple, after coming across his path both formally in a studio scheduled interview, and informally- as he walked un-noticed in the Essex House, where a weekend of the movie’s stars floating through the lobbies should have made him more noticeable as the star he just may become. Yet, he floated through – handsome, and at least twice on the big screen as a person to be remembered, and now it seems he’ll leave his mark. garrett

“Just look at him,” di Boneventura says, rhetorically, yet in awe, about the genetically gifted Hedlund. “He is beautiful. When you see him on screen, you can’t help but stare at him. And, he can act.”

While the name Garrett Hedlund is not yet a household name, or rolling off the tongues of most straight teen age girls and gay boys and men – people whom will ultimately make a star of Hedlund, if he is to become one – after starring alongside three of Hollywood and music’s most recognizable names, things will undoubtedly change.

garrettAlong with Mark Wahlberg, who got his Hollywood start in the music industry, Hedlund is also the brother of Tyrese Gibson – a model, actor and aspiring singer – and Andre 3000, whose real name is Andre Benjamin and the person responsible for making Outkast one of the world’s most famous bands. How much more famous can Outkast get? During the most recent presidential campaign, the Bush twins sang Outkast’s praises for the world to hear, when they gave their speech at the Republican National Convention.

One of the curious things about the movie, “Four Brothers,” aside that Mark Walhberg and Garrett Hedlund, two white boys and Andre 3000 and Tyrese, two black men, are labeled brothers in the literal sense – well, it’s pretty simple, they are adopted brothers – is that John Singleton, the film’s director, chose Hedlund, the one with no musical experience, to play the sole musician of the foursome.

“It is kind of funny,” laughs Hedlund, outfitted in blue jeans and a grey pullover t-shirt, which accents the deep tan on his long, smooth arms. “I never played music for money, but I did do a lot of trombone playing in school, choir in church and karaoke for fun. So I am not incompetent when it comes to music.”

The story that makes “Four Brothers” unique, in a summer of inane comedies, and insulting sci-fi action films, is that it is a film with heart, action, convincing storytelling, powerful acting and adept direction.four brothers

The “Brothers’” adopted mother is assassinated. While the boys have not been close with each other for many years, their mother’s violent murder brings them together – and they become convinced the police are incompetent and/or unwilling to find her murderers, so they vow to hunt down and kill her killers.

While cooped up, scheming to bring down the killers, the boys bond with each other again, after years of being estranged. Hedlund’s character, Jack, is the youngest and is the one picked on the most, called fag, and beat up, perhaps as many older, lower class siblings would do to their younger, artistically inclined brother.

I asked Hedlund if he though being teased, being called a homo and fag by his brothers in the movie, was meant to insult him or if it was done all in jest.

troy“I might have been teased about being gay,” says Hedlund, “But you really don’t know if my character is gay or straight or asexual. He doesn’t have a boyfriend, nor a girlfriend, and talks about neither sex. He is more of a loner, happy to be with his guitar, alone in his room. But, nonetheless, I think he is the strongest of all the brothers. He might be teased a lot but he gets the job done, whatever the job may be.”

Another exclusive that Hedlund is allowed in the movie is nudity. “Yeah, I am the only one who gets to show off his butt,” grins Hedlund, when I ask about the shower scene. Wahlberg is sitting on the toilet tending to business, and Hedlund is in the shower, while another brother is standing in the doorway as they carry on a conversation, waiting to pee. “It’s realistic for them,” he says, of the brothers, “to be sharing the bathroom, since there is only one in the house.

“As for showing off my butt, I couldn’t care less. I am sure I have done other things in my life that have been more shocking.”

Hedlund, who grew up in Minnesota and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona while in high school, resides in Los Angeles, now, and is as busy as any aspiring twenty year old movie star could be.

He’s six-three, blond and blue-eyed, and he has only been in three films, but 20-year-old newcomer Garrett Hedlund is one good reason to go see “Four Brothers” this weekend. The film is intense, heartfelt and occasionally hilarious, and stars Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, and Andre Benjamin, aka Andre 3000 of Outkast.
Wahlberg plays the lead as hot-headed Bobby Mercer, one of four grown adopted brothers, two black and two white, from the mean streets of Detroit who return home after their foster mother is killed in a convenience store robbery. The brothers learn that there’s more to the story as conspiracies are revealed and they vow to avenge their mother’s murder. They go up against a baddie, and things get harrowing at times with a wild ride of adrenaline and a handful of Kleenex moments. And a lot of great music on the soundtrack.

Three of the actors have music backgrounds, but it’s Hedlund who’s cast as the artistic youngest brother. Hedlund defended his talents in an interview with 365gay.com, “I did do a lot of trombone playing in school, choir in church and karaoke for fun. So I am not incompetent when it comes to music.” His character, Jack, may or may not be gay, but he is picked on by his brothers nonetheless: “I might have been teased about being gay. But you really don?t know if my character is gay or straight or asexual. He doesn?t have a boyfriend, nor a girlfriend, and talks about neither sex. Garrett was recently in “Friday Night Lights” with Billy Bob Thornton and he scored his first ever movie role in the colossal epic “Troy” playing Brad Pitt’s cousin, Patroclus. Judging by these first three films, I’d say his career is off to a fabulous start and hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot more of him in the future.

John Singleton has a flare for knowing when the time is right for musicians and rappers to be in his films. From Ice Cube (Boyz N The Hood) to Tupac (Poetic Justice) to Tyrese (Baby Boy), he has found good roles that they can be proud of, and now he’s about to do the same with Andre Benjamin of Outkast. We saw what Andre can do earlier this year in “Be Cool” and now he’s playing one of the leads in Singleton’s next film, “Four Brothers”. Another lead in the film is Garrett Hedlund. Hedlund was seen as Brad Pitt’s cousin in “Troy” and played one the football players in last year’s hit, “Friday Night Lights”. As both of these guys are just starting out in the film business, Benjamin and Hedlund spoke to blackfilm.com about their roles in the film.
John mentioned that you guys didn’t have time to rehearse, so how did you do your bonding?
Garrett: Primary, we probably became closer buddies out on the ice rink. What they didn’t force was hockey practice so these guys could learn how to skate, Andre and Tyrese.
Andre: Garrett’s a professional.
Garrett: I grew up in Minnesota, out on a farm, and I learned how to skate at a young age, so that was a great part of the film for me; to put the skates back on. I hadn’t picked up a stick in about four or five years, but yeah, we never had rehearsals, and that’s definitely something I had never done in a film. You have the time to figure out all aspects of a scene and work it out and work with these guys and really play with the options and we never got the opportunity on this but we got the opportunity spur of the moment spontaneity and to see what came out was sort of half of the mystery.Can you talk about playing hockey?
Andre: We only had like four or five days to practice and I had never worn skates before so my ankles weren’t together so and I was really like a baby for like the first three days but by the third day, I started to pick up and like it and started to do tricks and skate backwards and spray ice…
Garrett: While wearing pads. (Laughs)

Garrett, you’re the baby in this. Are you the baby at home?
Garrett: I am, but this is a whole different one. This character got picked up on and I don’t know if he sort of deserved it but it’s definitely completely different from the other characters that I’ve played. The sort of mentality… I don’t even remember what I was thinking in a lot of those times.

Did your character have a music career?
Garrett: They have a scene that was cut out that was sort of a flashback scene of him up on stage rocking up on this head through speaker and stripping his shirt off and raising his guitar to the air. I think it will be put back in during the end credits but that will maybe answer some questions.What are your musical tastes?
Garrett: I was a big fast Outkast before Andre joined the film and I was very excited to work with Andre on this; to work with a great cast and a great director and I feel very fortunate.

Who’s a better skater, Andre or Mark or better rapper, Andre or Mark?
Garrett: That’s good one. Better skater? Mark was practicing for about a month or earlier but you can still see the un-cordinations. Better rapper? Heck, I don’t know. I started listening to Marky Mark once I was in Canada and I started reciting lyrics to Marky Mark once I was in Canada.

How’d he feel about that?
Garrett: He would just say, “Shut up”.
Andre: He actually sang Tyrese R & B songs too.
Garrett: I was the only one that wasn’t a singer.

From “Troy” to “Friday Night Lights” to this, are you having a good time getting roles?
Garrett: Yeah, I have a good time getting roles. I been fortunate enough to work with a lot of good people to sort of sit back and take from them and learn. It’s definitely different character in those films. This character takes a lot of criticism and half the time I would be looking at the screen and I don’t even recognize who that is. So that was fun.

Did you have to read for this?
Garrett: Yes, I read with John. I hadn’t met John prior to that so I went in and was able to get it that way and I’ve to read for all the films I’ve done so far and I’m proud about that.

Did you meet the guys before and see how you would react with them.
Garrett: I met Mark after they had been considering me for the role and didn’t meet these guys until Toronto for the table read. We got out there a week before we started filming. We didn’t have time to sit back and bond and truly none of that was even forced; all of us just sort of naturally got along. Our personalities just sort of clicked and that was really fortunate for us to not force friendliness.Sofia Vergara mentioned that it was torture being in the cold.
Garrett: The part that was torture was so big and trying to be a rock star that he didn’t concentrate on wearing any warm fucking clothes. So while all these guys are outside wearing nice warm jackets, I have this very thin leather jacket and it was freezing.

Was there any significance to the tattoo you had in the film?
Garrett: Yeah. It was supposed to be the band’s name. There’s a scene that will be put back in during the end credits.

Was there anything in the script about your sexuality?
Garrett: Yeah. It was banter in the script which I don’t know. He’s a foster kid. He went from foster house to foster house so it implies an issue there. Whatever happened there definitely wasn’t spoken of.
